Oracle Spatial Studio - How to show regional statistics

There is a lot of public statistics available, but few include spatial information for statistics that are grouped into regions. This post shows how to visualize regional statistics in Spatial Studio. Visualise regional statistics on a map using Spatial Studio #JoelKallmanDay Many countries have a national statistical institute that collects data on whatever can be counted or measured in order to produce official statistics. Obviously this is important for politicians to use and abuse when they make their decisions. In Norway data.norge.no is a portal with a large collection of datasets from many sources. Statistics Norway (SSB) as you may expect has data on almost everything about the population and what is going on in our kingdom. You can explore Statbank Norway and dive into thousands of tables1. These statistics are usually grouped by kommune (municipality) or by fylke (county). At the moment there are 357 municipalities and 15 counties. ...

Oracle Spatial Studio - First session

Oracle Spatial Studio is a bit like a music studio. It is a place to explore things and get new ideas in the process. With this tool you can explore data on maps and discover new connections between various datasets. You don’t need a lot of data before a viualization becomes useful, especially for spatial data. First session with Oracle Spatial Studio With Spatial Studio it is easy to load, verify and visualize spatial data. Data you want to put on a map are often distributed in special format like GeoJSON and ESRI spatial files. I am not aware of any other simple tool that makes it easier to load this kind of data into the Oracle database. ...

104 million places from Foursquare in Oracle

Foursquare open sourced over 104 million points of interest (POIs) collected over several years. This is a large dataset perfect for testing and learning more about Spatial in the database. Oracle APEX has what you need to explore and display these places in your own browser. Meet Foursquare OS Places Foursquare used to be very popular. People where checking in everywhere with their mobile phones. In November last year Foursquare made these POIs available for download. You can read more about the dataset here, and you can explore the places with Foursquare Studio where the graphics above is taken from. ...

Adding an SRID to Spatial

A Norwegian version of this post can be found here . Add SRID 5973 to Oracle Spatial Oracle Spatial comes with over 6000 coordinate systems, but SRID 5973 is currently missing. However this is easy to add with a few insert-statements. Run this as user SYSTEM: insert into sdo_datums ( DATUM_ID, DATUM_NAME, DATUM_TYPE, ELLIPSOID_ID, PRIME_MERIDIAN_ID, INFORMATION_SOURCE, DATA_SOURCE, SHIFT_X, SHIFT_Y, SHIFT_Z, ROTATE_X, ROTATE_Y, ROTATE_Z, SCALE_ADJUST, IS_LEGACY, LEGACY_CODE) values ( 1096, 'Norway Normal Null 2000', 'VERTICAL', null, null, 'Norwegian Mapping Authority', 'OGP', NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, 'FALSE', NULL); INSERT INTO sdo_coord_ref_system ( srid, coord_ref_sys_name, coord_ref_sys_kind, coord_sys_id, datum_id, geog_crs_datum_id, source_geog_srid, projection_conv_id, cmpd_horiz_srid, cmpd_vert_srid, information_source, data_source, is_legacy, legacy_code, legacy_wktext, legacy_cs_bounds, is_valid, supports_sdo_geometry ) VALUES ( '5941', 'NN2000 height', 'VERTICAL', '6499', '5206', '5206', NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, 'Norwegian Mapping Authority.', 'EPSG', 'FALSE', NULL, NULL, NULL, 'TRUE', 'TRUE' ); INSERT INTO sdo_coord_ref_system ( srid, coord_ref_sys_name, coord_ref_sys_kind, coord_sys_id, datum_id, geog_crs_datum_id, source_geog_srid, projection_conv_id, cmpd_horiz_srid, cmpd_vert_srid, information_source, data_source, is_legacy, legacy_code, legacy_wktext, legacy_cs_bounds, is_valid, supports_sdo_geometry ) VALUES ( '5973', 'ETRS89 / UTM zone 33N + NN2000 height', 'COMPOUND', NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, '25833', '5941', 'Norwegian Mapping Authority', 'EPSG', 'FALSE', NULL, NULL, NULL, 'TRUE', 'TRUE' ); commit;

Displaying Spatial Data in SQL Developer

There are many ways to display spatial data, but when exploring a new data set in SQL Developer I think the built in Map View is practical. For this demo I used a list of nuclear power stations in the world, found via http://freegisdata.rtwilson.com/ . The Google Fusion Table can be exported to CSV format, and it includes the longitude and latitude which makes it easy to convert to SDO_GEOMETRY. After importing the file with SQL Developer into a table called NUCLEAR, I did this to add native Spatial data: ...

Importing GPX files to Oracle database, part 2

The previous post showed how to import a file in GPX-format into a table that uses the XMLType. This post shows how to import the waypoints from the GPS logger into a table with the native SDO_GEOMETRY type. First create a table: create table gps_log ( log_time timestamp with time zone, waypoint sdo_geometry, src varchar2(20)); The datatype for log_time is chosen like shown because the type used in the XML-file (xsd:dateTime) maps to this, which makes importing the time data much easier. (Have a look at the previous post to see this mapping.) ...
